Tragic Update on UPS Incident: Fatalities Increases to 13

The number of victims due to the freight aircraft that burst into flames and plummeted has now risen to 13, per latest statements.

Official's Remarks

“On my way to the Teamsters’ vigil, I received word of a 13th person that lost their life as a outcome of the UPS flight 2976 incident,” wrote the local official in a social media post. “My thoughts is with the families, friends and colleagues of all who were taken in this week’s calamity. We will endure this as one.”

Victims Confirmed

A statement from the company identified the officers operating the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our sympathies go out to all UPSer who has been affected and everyone in our local region – assisting you and ensuring you receive the care and resources you need is our priority,” the organization’s communication read.

Inquiry Updates

Federal investigators disclosed that the freight aircraft’s left wing ignited and an engine detached shortly after takeoff from the aviation hub, resulting in the plane to plummet and explode into a fireball.

The safety agency announced it is investigating the plane’s maintenance history, which was in the state for maintenance weeks prior to the incident.

Flight tracking records indicated the plane was on the tarmac in the Texas city from early September to 18 October.

“We are aware that this aircraft was located in that city,” remarked an investigator on Thursday, without providing a exact period. “We will examine each aspect of repairs that was completed, including the Texas period, straight to the date of the flight.”

Retrieval of Critical Items

The pilot’s recorder and information unit were found, and the engine was located on the tarmac.

The devices – referred to as black boxes – were built to survive crash impacts and extreme temperatures from blazes, and they appeared to be in one piece when located amid the wreckage. Authorities intend to reviewing data from the recorders.

Jet’s concluding recorded information showed an altitude of 475 feet and a speed of that speed ahead of the impact.

Maintenance History

Based on FAA records from that date, a crack on a structural piece in the center wing fuel tank needed repairs.

The company ST Engineering, which stated it offers structural repairs for the carrier’s aircraft and operates a repair facility in that city, refused to comment, but said it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities contacted it.

Operations Continue

In the meantime, the hub operations resumed last night with its Next Day Air or evening process, official Jim Mayer stated. Each of the three landing strips at the aviation hub were additionally back in operation.

The UPS package handling facility in the city is the organization’s most significant. The facility employs in excess of twenty thousand people in the locality, handles numerous flights daily and processes over 400,000 items each hour.

Public Support

A candlelight vigil was held on the night of that date by the local Teamsters Union, which acts for employees at the Louisville airport, the organization’s primary air cargo hub.

The union chapter, which represents staff, began the memorial with a moment of silence at the evening hour, the rough moment of the crash before.

“This tragedy was so unexpected, so unforeseen,” the official addressed the group of attendees. “No one had a chance to bid farewell to any one of those who we have said farewell to.”
